Seniors started across the board and then posed for pictures afterward in Germantown's, 14-4, regular season-ending loss at the hands of Pius XI last Friday.
And then Warhawks coach Parrish Wagner spoke optimistically about the future.
"We worked on a few things that we'll try to put in football jersey place for the (WIAA) tournament," he said. "We anticipate playing three games this week so we wanted to be ready."
The Warhawks (11-16 overall) took on Sussex Hamilton (19-12) in a WIAA regional final on Tuesday. If they won that, they would advance to a 1:30 p.m. sectional semifinal back at home on Friday on the Dream Field against the winner of second-seeded Brookfield East and seventh-seeded Slinger.
Indians recruit Tyler Thicke got the start against Sussex Hamilton.
The sectional final, with a berth at state on Rams jersey the line, will be at 4:30 p.m. Menomonee Falls (31-10) is the top seed. The WIAA State Tournament will be in Stevens Point on July 28 and 29.
Nine of the 10 Warhawks seniors got a start against Pius (13-19) as the Popes took a 1-0 lead against starter Brad Stefanski, and then never looked back.
It was 4-0 Pius before Jordan Infield singled in Brandon Tsoumas in the third for Germantown's first run and it was 8-1 when Eric Jordan smashed a 'no doubt' solo home run to left in the fifth.
The Warhawks tried to make a game of it in the sixth by scoring twice, including one on a Stefanski RBI single, to make it 8-4, but the Popes pounded out six runs in the top of the seventh to take any drama out of the event.
